Tax planning and disputes can be triggered by every business transaction. Our attorneys design tax-efficient methods to complete proposed transactions.  Our tax-planning services help businesses and individuals accomplish their goals with a minimum tax burden. We advise businesses under Subchapters C and S, LLCs, and partnerships under the partnership tax system, fiduciaries or trusts and estates, tax-exempt entities, and individuals.

We represent taxpayers in disputes with federal, state, and local taxing authorities and represent taxpayers in court against the government. Many taxpayers suffer financial hardships which lead to the need to resolve unpaid tax liabilities. The government may seek to unreasonably recharacterize a client’s business activities to assess excessive taxes owed.

As a part of our tax controversy representation, we have negotiated settlements for our taxpayer clients (both individuals and businesses) with the Internal Revenue Service and the North Carolina Department of Revenue. We routinely negotiate installment payment plans, offers in compromise, reduced balance settlement agreements, innocent spouse relief agreements, and currently not collectible status. For example, we settle disputes with the government for income taxes, gift and estate taxes, and employment and withholding taxes.

In the U.S. News-Best Lawyers rankings of “Best Law Firms,” Colombo Kitchin has been awarded regional first tier rankings in Taxation Law for several years.
